Recent show

Friday, April 3, 6PM show

My most recent newscast covered a mix of developing and forward-looking stories that highlighted activity in the community. It was a First Alert Weather Day, so I led with that coverage as the most urgent story, then moved to new images from a large fire in Sturgeon. The A block also featured highway improvement roadwork and a story about students using AI to support CPD. Between the A and B blocks, we spotted a backup on I-70, so I pulled a MODOT traffic cam and quickly wrote a VO to show the live accident.

Building out the lead

During my time at KOMU-8, I’ve had numerous opportunities to shape and elevate the top of my shows leading with breaking news and developing compelling openings. I focus on setting the tone immediately by writing clear headlines and structuring the rundown to emphasize urgency and impact. My goal is to hook viewers from the first moments of the broadcast and carry that momentum throughout the show.

Sports showcasing

I am proud of my ability to highlight different aspects of our newscasts through the specific branding we showcase at KOMU-8. I have produced shows featuring our “Friday Night Fever” high school football coverage and our “Hoops Madness” high school basketball coverage. Both of these require strong, consistent brand integration. These opportunities allow me to strategically promote and tease the franchise throughout the broadcast through graphics, teases, story placement, and pacing so the branding feels cohesive and impactful from start to finish.

Special moments

Throughout my time at KOMU-8, a few moments have truly stood out. On Feb. 27, 2026, our 6PM newscast marked Evie Barton’s final show after three years as nightside anchor, and we closed with a special tribute honoring the kindness and joy she brought to so many. On Aug. 29, 2025, we held our first Friday Night Fever broadcast without Ben Arnet, a Columbia native who served as sports director for five years. John Anderson and I honored Ben and the students covering Mid-Missouri high school football, and in our final block, John Murphy ad-libbed a heartfelt sendoff recognizing their dedication.

Full A block

This A block came from a packed show filled with strong reporter-driven content, national coverage, and sports which featured live reporting from Atlanta. With so much material to work with, I collaborated closely with my executive producer to strategically stack the show in a way that showcased each element without overwhelming the viewer. We led with a nuclear energy story, supported by impactful local coverage, and closed with national content. Since we had a reporter in in Atlanta, the transition into broader national coverage felt seamless while still maintaining a strong local connection.
